About Us
Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA was established in 1906. Originally sited in Heneage Road in the town of Grimsby, the YMCA rapidly became an integral part of the local community, offering short-term accommodation, and sports and leisure facilities. Our primary focus has always been that of young people.
In the late-60s, then-Chairman Roland Archer approached a group of local businessmen about relocating the YMCA from its Heneage Road home. The location chosen for the new home of Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA was the current Peaks Lane site. The land was generously donated to the YMCA and movement was completed in 1973.
Now a 67-bed hostel, Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA's Peaks Lane Hostel has continued that long legacy of housing provision and support and community activities for young people.
On 1st January 2001, Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA opened The Foyer on Orwell Street in Grimsby. Providing 26 bed spaces for young people aged 16-25, The Foyer is not a ‘hostel’ and does not just deal with accommodation but ensures that all aspects of a young person’s life are looked at, supported and developed.
The Community Housing Project, located in the heart of Grimsby, opened its doors in March 2010 and offers supported housing to five clients.
More recently, Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA have looked at redeveloping their Peaks Lane site and in February 2009 the AMBITIONS Project was born. Developed by clients; AMBITIONS stands for Ambition, Motivation, Belief, Inspiration, Trust, Integrity, Organisation, New Start and Support. The ongoing vision of a modern, excellently-designed campus means that Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA has an exciting future ahead.
The change of name from Grimsby & Cleethorpes YMCA to Grimsby Cleethorpes and Humber Region YMCA took place at the AGM in May 2009 and encompasses the vast amount of work that GCHRYMCA does in the wider Humber Region community.
